How do I get started with CARET Court Rules?

  • Updated

You can create automated Calendar Events based on the rules calculated with CARET Court Rules.

*Note: This is an add-on feature available in all subscription tiers.

Managing Court Holidays

CARET Court Rules uses the firm’s court holiday schedule in all event calculations. Before you can get started with CARET Court Rules, an Administrator or Office Manager will need to add the appropriate Court Holidays for your jurisdiction.

To add/edit Court Holidays:

  1. Select Firm Settings from the drop-down menu beside your avatar.
  2. Click Events & Court Rules in the vertical menu bar and Court Rule Calendar Rule Holidays from the expanded menu.

  3. New firms will not show any holidays in the list, but Administrators and Office Managers can manage all Court Holidays from this window.

Note: CARET Court Rules requires at least 10 years’ worth of holidays in order to be able to create new events.

  1. Click Generate to start creating all Federal Holidays. The Starting Year defaults to two years in the past.  The Number of Years defaults to 20 years. Click Generate to create all Federal Court Holidays.
  2. The Federal Holidays will appear in the list. To remove any holiday from the list you will need to click on it and then click Delete in the footer.

  1. Click Add to create local holidays for your jurisdiction. In California for instance, you might want to add Farm Workers Day. Fill in the appropriate fields and then click Save to create your new holiday.

Now that Court Holidays have been added, the firm can begin creating new events from Court Rules.

Creating new Events from a Court Rule

To set up new Events from a Court Rule:

  1. Navigate to your Calendar and select + on the right-hand side of the tab bar and select Create New Event from Court Rule from the drop-down menu.

  2. Fill in the required fields, including the Matter, Venue/Rule Set, Rule, and Trigger Date

  3. Click Get Deadlines and select the Events you wish to create and click Save

This will create Events on your Calendar only for the selected dates.

  1. You can view or edit your saved selected Events on your Calendar by going to that date, or by viewing the Event list in your Matter details.

Adding Dates from a Court Rule

If you wish to add dates that were not originally selected:

  1. Edit one of the Events that was previously created and select Open Related Events

  2. Check off any additional Events you wish to add and select Update to create the rest of the Events, which can be found on the Calendar or under the Events tab of the Matter.

Rescheduling Court Rule Events

CARET Legal makes it easy to automatically reschedule all dependent events when an important date needs to change.

  1. Open any event that has dependencies (like the trigger event) and change the date and click Update.
  2. Confirm which events you want automatically adjust and then click Move.

All selected events will move to the new date.

Adjusting for Holidays

CARET Legal includes your custom Court Holidays in event calculations. When creating new events from a Court Rule, the user would be prompted for any dependent steps that fall on a holiday.

To adjust for a holiday:

  1. When prompted about an event falling on a Holiday, you can choose to keep that date or recalculate based on a new date that you pick.

  2. Click Keep Date if you wish to schedule the event as is. Otherwise, select a new date and then click Update Date to recalculate based on the new date.
