🆕 Matter to Matter Trust Transfer FAQs

Overview & Purpose

What is a Matter to Matter Trust Transfer?

A capability that lets you reassign funds already held in trust from one matter to another for the same client, without cutting a check or making a new bank deposit. Funds stay in the same trust bank account; only the matter attribution changes.

Why did we add this feature?

To replace the older process (issue a check from one matter, re‑deposit to another) with a fast, auditable in‑app transfer—especially useful when closing a matter or reallocating retainers across a client’s multiple matters.

Does any money move between bank accounts?

No. The trust bank account is unaffected. The system records a transfer out on the source matter and a transfer in on the destination matter; the bank total remains the same.

Eligibility & Scope

Which matters are eligible for a transfer?

Between two matters that belong to the same client. The FROM/TO lists only show matters for the selected primary client, and TO excludes the chosen FROM matter.

Does this work for operating retainers or only trust?

Only trust. Operating retainers continue to follow existing processes.

Can I transfer if the source matter has no trust funds?

No. You’ll be prompted that the matter has no trust account/balance, and the transfer is blocked.

Can I transfer more than what’s available?

No. Transfers cannot exceed 100% of the source matter’s available trust balance.

Performing a Transfer

Where do I start the transfer?

Matter to matter transfers are done from the Accounting section on the Invoice and Payments tab. For step-by-step instructions, please check our article on How to transfer Trust funds from Matter-to-Matter.

Will the original deposit date change?

No. The original bank deposit date remains unchanged. Each matter simply shows where the funds came from or were moved to.

Can I quickly perform multiple allocations (e.g., split one trust across many matters)?

Currently, each transfer is submitted separately.

System Behavior, Ledger Views & Audit

What appears on the Matter Ledger after a transfer?

  • Source (FROM) matter: A “Matter Transfer” line with funds out and a link to the destination matter.
  • Destination (TO) matter: A “Matter Transfer” line with funds in and a link back to the source.

Is this captured in the Activity Log?

Yes. The Activity Log records who made the transfer and the FROM/TO matters involved.

Why does “Last deposit date” show a dash on Trust Ledger Summary?

Because a transfer is not a bank deposit. If a matter only received funds via transfer, there is no deposit date to display (training should clarify this expected behavior).

Reporting & Reversal

Where do transfers appear in reporting?

Transfers display on the Matter Ledger, appear on the General Ledger (accrual), and roll up in the Trust Ledger Summary by matter.

Are these transfers available in Analytics/Domo?

Standard views show them today; broader Analytics exposure was discussed and may depend on future data‑exposure enhancements.

Can I delete or undo a transfer?

Transfers are not deleted, but a reversal can be done by transferring the funds back. If the funds have been allocated, you will need to remove the allocation.
