Sales Tax FAQs

  • Updated

In an effort to bring C^RET and CARET Legal into full compliance with federal regulations, we are collecting state sales tax from CARET Legal customers. Below are some common questions regarding this change in billing.

FAQ’s

  • Why are we collecting Sales tax Now?
To comply with state sales tax regulations. The Wayfair ruling by the Supreme Court of the US allowed states to force out-of-state retailers to begin collecting and remitting sales tax.  The ruling was effective June 21, 2018, but our systems were not ready to collect sales tax until now.  This is why you are only seeing the tax on your invoice now. Our Customer Service staff cannot go into the specifics of your firms or individual sales tax status as this is a highly technical tax matter that varies based on your location, tax status and the products you purchased.  However, we can tell you that if sales tax has been added to your invoice it is because we are required to do so by law.

  • Were we compliant before?
C^RET and CARET Legal have been, and will remain, compliant. However, if sales tax is added to your invoice, it is because we are now required to do so by law.
  • What if I am tax exempt?
Please send an exemption certificate to billing@abacusnext.com and we will note that in your account, so you are no longer charged sales tax.
  • Why is CARET Legal charging sales tax when other software products don't charge?
We are unable to answer questions as to why sales tax is or is not collected for other customer and product combinations. There are different rules in different states for different companies.
  • What if I don’t agree with the increase in my subscription fee?
CARET Legal has not increased the price of your software. We are simply collecting and remitting sales tax in compliance with the law.  This is also within the terms of our contract which is generally noted in the “Payments” section of our Terms & Conditions:

  • Who do I contact if I have a question?
If you have a question related to the processing of your sales tax exemption certificate, please contact billing@abacusnext.com as the sales tax-exempt certificate is the only variable that may be specific to your business.
